Another step in reducing the amount of chemicals you and your family come in contact is to make your own laundry soap. In this article we will look at one laundry soap recipe. This detailed description will tell you exactly what to put in your own homemade soap.
You will, of course, want to gather all your ingredients before you start. So, the first item you will need is a bar of soap. I know we are talking laundry soap, but stay with me. A soap like Fels Naptha, Zote or Ivory will do, most use Fels Naptha.
Most any type of bar soap can be used, but the above are your best choice. It is best to stick with what works.
The next ingredient is Borax. Yup, the 20 Mule Team Borax. You may remember the old commercials on TV. A lot of grocery stores still carry this brand and it should be in the laundry aisle. Borax is a natural product mined from the ground. It has whitening properties and deodorizes your clothes.
Now, we want to find some washing soda. Yes, there is such a thing as washing soda. It is very similar to baking soda, but with a different chemical structure and purpose. Washing soda is also made by Arm & Hammer and is found in the laundry section of your grocery.
Just think all this great stuff was right there all the time, we just did not know it.
Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work. Here is the recipe.
We will need one-third of the bar of soap
One-quarter cup of borax
One-quarter cup of washing soda
Small container to mix your soap
Pan to melt soap
Your cheese grater to grate the bar of soap
Here's how you put it all together, step-by-step.
Take your grater and shave off one-third of the soap bar.
Place six cups of water into your sauce pan and heat the soap shavings until melted.
While continuously stirring pour in the washing soda and then the borax.
Place four cups of hot water into the container.
Pour into the container of hot water the mixture of soap flakes, washing soda and borax.
Mix these ingredients well.
Place one gallon of cold water into the container and mix well.
Let the mixture sit until it starts to gel.
Once it has set-up it is ready to use. It will not get as hard as a bar of soap. Just experiment with different loads of clothes to see what is right for your washer and the size of wash load.
